Garden Update June 17

Finally some sunshine!

For the first time I went to the Baker Street Wednesday market. Bought some cucumber, hot pepper and sweet potato plants and some fresh carrots. How do these people do it? I am struggling with my garden and here they are already selling produce. Geez... Driving home, listening to the radio, and an ad that Georama's is having a sale! Soooo....bought me a flat of marigolds and a flat of red and white petunias for $12 each...why should I start my own? Bought some kale too.

Made a stop at Ellisons and bought a different slug bait....spread it as soon as I got home....and I found a couple of Roma plants too...

Yellow cups with Vaseline have caught quite a few small bugs. In a conversation with Vanessa she reminded me of putting collars around plants, so I thought what have I to lose?!

Another topic on the gardening group was about scented Epsom salts. Someone used eucalyptus scented and while it burned the leaves when touched, where they had sprinkled it seemed to keep back the slugs. I happened to have a bag of lavender & citrus, so I sprinkled all of it around the bales and beds. Smells awesome! They also used peppermint extract...will have to remember to try this too.

Garlic....scapes are starting

Watermelon did not survive...slugs...so I'm trying the sweet potatoes here...mint is doing great

Tomatoes are still going strong

Onions

Peas....can't wait...pods have started but still not filled

Peas, bush beans, eggplant

Planted the rest of the cucumber seeds and more peas....I will win!

Sunflower, cucumbers, hot peppers,

Celery, tomatoes, cabbage

Tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, cabbage

Split some lavender and planted them here. I'm hoping this is successful ... Smells so good!
I think I'm going to transplant some of my perennial geraniums here too....

Lemon something or other....rosemary & thyme & mint

Weather

Here it is....June 14th and it is hailing and now raining quite hard! Between the slugs (which we drowned over 100 last night) and the weather, it will be a miracle if we get any produce! I'm not winning this war :-(

I have covered what I can in the strawbales with plastic and flower pots hoping they will survive...

Which weather forecast does one believe?

Another Week in the Garden Goes By

Wow, it sure s warmed up the past few days! I've been working in the garden every morning until 11:30ish and then I can't take the heat any longer.

I continue the war with the slugs & bugs...can't tell who is winning :-(

I saw my first ladybug today, so we had a little chat...she was very understanding lol...I told her to puhleeze invite all her friends and families!

Strawberries have started...so exciting!

This is the 3rd time planting cukes....finally some showing. Hopefully they'll still be there tomorrow!

It is quite apparent that the more mature plants are doing much better in the bales. Also waiting for the warmer weather helps too. Nights must be around 8 degrees and no less!

This was a fun project. Rieka gave me her skinny jeans that she wore out and I stuffed the legs with plastic bags filled with shredding. Took an old broom and nailed another stake for the arms. Pot of geraniums sit inside the waistband of the pants added an old shirt, garden gloves and voila!

Eggplants, peas, beans....I planted more beans yesterday...we'll see if they come up...

Strawberries in the first 2 beds, added shredding for mulch and of course no weeds!

First planting of peas...they have 3 little pods today! Woot!

Radishes & carrots...I'm not very good growing these, will have to try something different next year.

Potatoes are fantastic! Also corn & pole beans & sunflowers....

This is my version of hugelkulture....probably not the best...we shall see. I planted 2 watermelon plants

My tomatoes that I started from seed are doing really well in the raised beds. Used Saran wrap around the tomato cages. Seems to be working fine. Much better than the ones in the bales.

Back deck is looking awesome! Strawberries in the boxes up top...grape vine to the left & kiwi to the right. Upside down planters are doing well too.
