Cross Body Bags

With my new “Bro” I was playing with the embroidery designs that came with it. Loads of Disney designs that are so adorable...this is what came of it!

Now it took me a whole afternoon and a whole bunch of new curse words trying to figure out how to insert the lining! So I have outlined my steps for the next time I want to make these.

I used the fusible batting as it doesn’t move around and the interfacing is what I use for appliqué and the name escapes me! But it is sticky on both sides and worked really well for this project. Use whatever you have 😁

Main fabric:

Body - 8.5 x 9.5 - cut 1 ( if adding *opt* cut 2)

Body - 8.5 x 13 - cut 1

*opt* Flap - 8.5 x 3.5 - cut 1 (includes embroidery insert)

Batting - 8.5 x 13 - cut 1

Batting - 8.5 x 9.5 - cut 1

Lining - 8.5 x 13 (add 1” for *opt) - cut 1

Interfacing - 8.5 x 13 (add 1” for *opt) - cut 1

Lining - 8.5 x 9.5 - cut 1

Interfacing - 8.5 x 9.5 - cut 1

2 - D Rings

1 - adjustable buckle

1 - magnetic button

1.5 mtres - strap

(A) Main fabric and batting:

(8.5 x 13) (4” down from flap)

Mark and Quilt 2” squares

(B) Lining and interfacing:

(8.5 x 13)

Iron interfacing to wrong side of lining  (remove backing)

With right sides together sew (A) and (B) at the top only (DO NOT PRESS)

On the lining find the center and measure 1” down from seam. Insert magnet on the lining side.

Right sides together and sew (A) and (B) from the top to the flap seam...aprox 4” down

With the wrong side of the lining facing up fold back the lining as far as the stitching allows. You should see the right sides of the lining and main fabric going in opposite directions with a “pocket” in the middle.

Cut 3” of strap and insert through 1 d-ring folding the strap in half. Repeat one more time.

On the main fabric side measure down 1.5” from the opening and place the strap with the d-ring towards the center! Tack in place. Repeat for the other side.

(C) Main fabric and batting

(8.5 x 9.5)

Mark and Quilt 2” squares

(D) Lining and interfacing

(8.5 x 9.5)

Iron interfacing to wrong side of lining  (remove backing)

With right sides together sew (C) and (D) at the top only (DO NOT PRESS)

Open up and place right sides together with (A) and (B)

Stitch together the main fabric across the bottom and up the 9.5” sides forming the body of the bag.

On (C) find the center and measure down 1.5”. Insert second part of magnet.

With right sides together (lining) - sew outside seams and across bottom leaving a generous opening for turning.

Turn inside out and sew opening closed.

Press carefully remembering that the interfacing is sticky!

Attach straps and you are done!

Here’s a great tutorial on how to attach the adjustable straps https://youtu.be/wrFCrX6rbl8
